Interview with Dr. Antoni Chan (1991 - 1992)
This month, we feature Dr. Antoni Chan, a Consultant Rheumatologist and Physician based in the UK. He was one of the pioneers at KTJ.
Which year did you join KTJ, and when did you graduate from KTJ?
I joined KTJ as the pioneer group in 1991. I graduated from KTJ in 1992.
Which house were you in?
In the first year (1991), I was in the only boarding house, the main one. It was shared by both girls and boys and separated by metal gates in the corridors. 1992 I was in Imran House with Mr. Barry Wood as the Housemaster.
What do you remember most about KTJ?
The excitement of being in the pioneer group in January 1991. To arrive in KTJ, go to the new buildings, and meet new friends was the feeling that you were creating history and taking steps that many will follow in years to come. When I arrived, the big hole in the ground, which would later become the swimming pool and sports complex, came to mind. As they say, the rest is history!
Tell us about your educational journey at KTJ.
For my A-Levels, I did Chemistry (Mr Simon Lai), Biology (Ms Lisa), and Mathematics (Ms Noorsham). I found the educational system to be learner-driven. KTJ encouraged independent learning and critical thinking when lessons were delivered. This is a crucial skill, and KTJ prepares you for university study. I also attended French (Mr.Tattersfield), Philosophy, Economics, Music, and Botany classes. These optional lessons widen your worldview and allow you to have good conversations with others.
If you had to go back and do your high school (KTJ) experience all over again, what would you change and why?
Nothing, really. I had an incredible 18 months at KTJ and have great memories of it. I fostered close friendships, and every batch will have their own stories and experiences to share.
What do you do now for work?
After leaving KTJ, I studied Medicine (MBChB) at Aberdeen University. I am now a Consultant Rheumatologist and Physician based in the UK.
What did you learn that is most applicable (proper, most vital) to your current position?
Whatever you do, once you decide to do it, do it to the best of your ability. Staying powerful means taking counsel and advice from people whom you trust. Aim to be a better version of yourself each year and play the long game. You will get there when you focus on watering your grass and not looking at the grass on the other side.
Who should we feature next in our KTJ Community?
Zain Azrin (lawyer, now in KL) is a good one to feature.
