Alumni Updates: Suriani Kempe

Suriani Kempe (KTJ alumnus 1996-1999), a prominent human rights activist and president of Family Frontiers, has successfully advocated for gender equality and citizenship rights in Malaysia.

Under her leadership, Family Frontiers played a pivotal role in securing a landmark amendment to the Federal Constitution in 2023, allowing Malaysian mothers to confer citizenship to their children born overseas. This victory marked a significant step toward eliminating gender discrimination in the country's citizenship laws.

Suriani's dedication to social justice has earned her recognition, including the Hän Honour award from Finland's Foreign Affairs Ministry for her unwavering commitment to gender equality. Her work continues to inspire change, as she collaborates with other activists to address issues of statelessness and citizenship vulnerabilities. Suriani's efforts exemplify the power of advocacy in creating a more equitable society.
