Malaysian Rare Disorders Society Hackathon

KTJ students recently took part in the Malaysian Rare Disorders Society Hackathon, an inspiring initiative championed by KTJ alumna Ms Nadiah Hanim Abdul Latif.

Ms Nadiah is President of the Malaysian Rare Disorders Society and through her continued partnership with KTJ, students were given a unique opportunity to engage with real-world challenges while making a meaningful difference to the lives of others.

Working alongside members of the Malaysian Rare Disorders Society, students gained valuable insight into the everyday experiences of individuals and families living with rare disorders. Through discussions and collaboration, they developed a deeper understanding of the obstacles faced by the community and the importance of designing solutions that are both practical and impactful.

Drawing on this understanding, teams used recycled materials sourced from around the KTJ campus to create innovative prototypes aimed at supporting everyday activities and addressing genuine needs identified by members of the rare disorder community. The challenge encouraged students to combine creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills with empathy and a strong sense of service.

For Ms Nadiah, the event was another example of the positive impact that can be achieved when alumni remain connected to their school community. Her leadership of the Malaysian Rare Disorders Society and ongoing involvement with KTJ continue to inspire students to use their talents and education to benefit others.

The Hackathon was made possible through the collaboration of Ms Nadiah, KTJ's Head of Senior School, Mr Darren Tolan, and colleagues from both organisations, whose support helped create this valuable learning experience.

We are deeply grateful to Ms Nadiah for her continued contribution to both KTJ and the wider community. Through opportunities such as this, our students learn that innovation is at its most powerful when it is driven by understanding, compassion and a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
